Welcome Back!
I hope everyone had a sublime spring break. Now we are back and it feels like the semester is slipping away. So let me give you a heads up about deadlines. Your zine is due in two weeks (Mar 28). I would like to see you produce substantive pages for your zine NOW. Some of you already started your zines over the break, and I’m impressed by that.
Since we are not having class on Monday, I want to move the readings around a bit. So here is our schedule for this week:
Mon, Mar 17:
No class/readings
Wed, March 19:
reynolds & press: there’s a riot going on, grrrls against boy-rock (323-331)
tringali: love guns, tight pants, and big sticks (76-82)
stein: rock against romance (59-70)
Friday, March 21:
byrd: claiming jezebel (239-247)
pough: love feminism but where’s my hip-hop? (85-95)
As for the homework on Friday, you have two options:
1. make a CD of a few songs that you feel speak to you about some of the issues we’ve discussed in this class (good or bad). Write up a playlist and discuss why you included them, telling me in detail what you think the song is about, stating your opinion on it (why you like it/why you hate it/why you love to hate it/why you love it despite all the hate surrounding it)
2. Make a CD with songs by female artists or bands with women in them - I challenge you to think of as many as you can. Write up a playlist and briefly discuss why you included them, how you came to know that artist, and what the message of the song is about.
Final note: If you are one who is not blessed with the knowledge or technology for making CD’s, just writing up a playlist will be okay too. But I would like to listen to some of your songs!
